Cardiovascular risk markers
Research suggests regular consumption of small oily fish such as sardines is associated with lower cardiovascular mortality. Pooled analyses of prospective cohorts point consistently in the same direction, with the clearest signal at one to two portions a week compared with none.
What may be going on: Long-chain omega-3s lower triglycerides, modestly reduce blood pressure and alter platelet and membrane composition; displacement of other foods likely contributes as well.
Strong evidence. Consistent findings across multiple good-quality human studies.
